SHOSTAKOVICH 9
Metro Series Concert #1
BPO’s first concert of 2024 sees Bernstein and Shostakovich juxtaposed against contemporary composers for a program that will offer something for everyone.
Opening with Linda Robbin Coleman’s For A Beautiful Land, this symphonic ode to Coleman’s homeland of America is filled with the rhapsodic celebration of nature. On The Waterfront is Bernstein at his finest; originally written as a film score, the melodies flow from one searing emotional extreme to the next.
The boisterous Elevator Music by Australian composer Graeme Koehne begins the second half, with the tongue-in-cheek title concealing a delightful pastiche of jazz, film music and Latin influence impossible to not dance to.
Conductor David Law ends the program with the Shostakovich Symphony No. 9. Often referred to as his “Classic” symphony, the work is both light-hearted and wonderfully clear in its approach—with an almost Haydn-like simplicity contrasted with a sense of humour in orchestration.
