MY FATHERLAND
Metro Series Concert #2
Image and design: Adam Finch
Ma Vlast (My Fatherland) and Sibelius’s Second Symphony come together as a celebration of far-off lands.
Opening with the harpsong of the mythic bard Lumír, Prague’s castle, Vysehrad, looks down on the river Vltava (or Moldau) in Smetana’s ode to his native land of Bohemia. Soloist Emily Granger then takes centre stage for the elegant and refined Morceau de Concert by Saint-Saens, in which the harp luxuriates in true French style.
Sibelius’s achingly beautiful Symphony No. 2 is, in his own words, a “confession of the soul”. The work opens with a simple three-note motif, and ends with a power and majesty that has grown from the roots of what came before.
